Not very often does something come truly free, but if you are working with compressed air in any way, you should know about the MEASUR tool. It is offered by the U.S. Department of Energy through the Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy division.
The software is offered as follows and includes 12 calculators for compressed air: βThe Manufacturing Energy Assessment Software for Utility Reduction (MEASUR) is an open-source software suite for increasing the understanding of energy use and potential savings opportunities for industrial and commercial equipment. MEASUR is based on and will ultimately replace several of DOEβs legacy software tools. It leverages DOEβs extensive understanding of industrial energy use to help users better understand the energy use of their equipment. It also allows them to evaluate various energy-related βwhat-ifβ scenarios to quantify potential energy and cost savings.β
βThe tool is designed for industrial energy coordinators, plant managers, engineers, and personnel who are interested in improving system efficiency and measuring potential savings opportunities in both dollars and energy savings.β
Tools include compressed air calculators for:
- Compressed Air Pressure Reduction β This calculator is used to quantify the energy savings associated with reducing compressed air system pressure.
- Actual to Standard AirflowΒ β The calculator converts ACFM (Actual cubic feet per minute) to SCFM (Standard cubic feet per minute) and vice versa for the given conditions using either ASME standard conditions or CAGI/ISO standard conditions.
- Leak Loss Estimator β Bag MethodΒ β Estimates the leakage losses in a compressed air system using the bag method.
- ΊΪΑΟ³ΤΉΟ Air RequirementΒ β Estimate the quantity of air required by a specific single acting or a double acting piston cylinder compressor.
- Receiver Tank SizingΒ β Calculate the required size of the receiver tank
- Usable Air CapacityΒ β Estimate the quantity of compressed air that is available for use.
- Pipe SizingΒ β Determine pipe diameter when the volumetric flow velocity, pressure, and design velocity are known.
- Velocity in the PipingΒ β Estimate the velocity of compressed air throughout system piping.
- System CapacityΒ β Determine total capacity of compressed air system or specific pipes and receiver tanks
- Operation CostsΒ β Estimate the cost of operation of the compressor in both fully and partially loaded instances.
- Compressed AirΜύβΒ Leak SurveyΒ β Used to quantify the energy savings associated with reducing compressed air leaks.
