Centred is a better approach.
For systems without a variable capacity ( VSD or variable geometry) compressor, any sequence should have the smallest compressor trimming the system. This is the most efficient, maximises the life and minimises the maintenance costs on bigger compressors.
For systems with 3-4 compressors on line, it can be more efficient for the system to have the smallest machine modulating rather than having it cycling load/unload. This is because it minimise the average pressure on the fully loaded machines ( which would be higher if the trim machine was cycling load/unload).
