The users had simply been adjusting the trip levels to keep running.Without shutting down, a clamp on ammeter revealed quite different currents among the three phases. Tightening the clamp nut almost a whole turn on one lug solved the problem. The foreman/supervisor had been clueless about the simple cause.

Comment on ELGi launches ground-breaking compressed air stabilization technology by William K. /elgi-launches-ground-breaking-compressed-air-stabilization-technology/#comment-462470 Sat, 15 Feb 2025 01:33:56 +0000 /?p=9304#comment-462470 The technique “aligning compressor capacity with plant air demand through controlled recirculation “seems a whole lot like the years old scheme of bleeding off excess volume back to the intake port of the compressor. It is OK for truck air systems where the engine is running constantly delivering most of it’s power to moving the truck, AND the compressor head is cooled by the circulating engine coolant. The problem that I see is that compressing air takes energy, and if that energy is not used to do useful work, IT IS WASTED!! The common unloading scheme avoids that portion of wasted energy. And how hard is it on a compressor to unload and then pick up the load again???

Comment on Compressed air fail: Air-oil separator failure by William Ketel /compressed-air-fail-air-oil-separator-failure/#comment-441320 Mon, 16 Sep 2024 00:31:09 +0000 /?p=9118#comment-441320 Catastrophic failures like that can have far worse results than an oil bath. Hydraulic systems with accumulators can deliver many gallons of hot oil in less than a second.
Precautions in case of possible failures are the better choice. Blast deflectors might have prevented the oiled auditor event.
