In Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations, pneumatic actuators have typically been controlled from cabinets located in safe areas. Long wiring runs can increase installation and commissioning time, make maintenance and troubleshooting more difficult, and limit future system expansion.

Festo’s VTUG-EX valve terminal provides fieldbus connectivity for use in Class I, Division 2 areas. Ethernet-based fieldbus communication connects the terminal directly to a PLC, reducing the need for individual actuator wiring over long distances.

The VTUG-EX supports EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and PROFIBUS communication through interchangeable bus nodes. It can also connect directly to an IO-Link master. The terminal supports up to 24 valve stations, or 48 solenoid coils, and flow rates of up to 630 l/min (22 CFM). Hot-swap valve replacement, multiple pressure zones, and panel-mounted installation support maintenance and system configuration. Certifications, including UL Class I, Division 2 and IECEx, allow the VTUG-EX to be used in hazardous locations in multiple regions.

Festo builds control cabinets for hazardous locations

Automation systems in hazardous locations also require control cabinets designed to distribute power, communication, and control signals safely. These cabinets must meet the certification requirements for the environments in which they are installed.

Festo designs, builds, assembles, tests, and certifies control cabinets for hazardous and non-hazardous areas. The completed cabinets are delivered ready for installation. Festo also manufactures many of the automation components used in these cabinets, including valve terminals, air-preparation equipment, emergency-shutdown systems, and I/O products. This allows the cabinet and its components to be specified and integrated through a single supplier.

As semiconductor gas box designs incorporate more process lines and control points, the number of pilot valves required to manage critical gases increases. Typical valve terminals with limited capacity force OEMs to use multiple units, increasing panel space, wiring complexity, build time, and system cost.

Festo offers the VTOC valve terminal designed for high-density semiconductor applications. The VTOC features 48 valve stations – twice the standard VTOC capacity – within a single compact footprint unit. Each valve slice controls two processes, enabling up to 96 process control points per unit.

Rather than extending the terminal lengthwise to increase valve count, Festo redesigned the VTOC terminal to integrate two compact rows of valves, allowing the terminal to deliver higher control capacity while maintaining a compact form factor ideal for conserving control panel space.

The VTOC uses swappable interface modules to support Ethernet/IP, PROFIBUS, EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, and CC-Link, allowing the same valve terminal to be used across control environments. This design supports consistency across builds, reduces engineering overhead, lowers inventory, and promotes efficiency through familiarity with a standard component.

With each valve rated for up to 40 million operations, the VTOC delivers a long service life in high-duty environments. The modular valve design enables fast identification and replacement of individual valves, reducing maintenance time and minimizing disruption to critical processes.

AutomationDirect has added Mindman MVSC and MVSC1 directional control solenoid valves and manifolds which provide reliable, high performance air control for a wide range of automated systems. The MVDC stackable solenoid valve series builds on that capability with a modular design that keeps installations clean and scalable, making it easy to create efficient multi station valve banks. For compact machinery and precision equipment, MVDY miniature solenoid valves offer fast, dependable switching in a space saving form factor ideal for tight layouts. A wide variety of coil voltages, operating pressures, and port sizes are available for Mindman solenoid valves.

MVAA pilot valves complement these solenoid families by delivering efficient, low power actuation for larger valves and manifolds, supporting responsive and energy conscious system designs. Available in 5-port (4-way) and 3-port (3-way) designs with 116 psi max operating pressure.

For operator controlled applications, Mindman general purpose foot and hand valves provide durable, intuitive manual control suited for a range of industrial environments. Various port sizes, positions, types (rotary lever, push-pull, pushbutton, hand lever, etc.) and pressures are offered.

When installations call for simplified panel layouts or compact operator stations, Mindman miniature manual air valves provide clean, precise manual actuation in a small footprint.

Rounding out the offering, MVHS 2-port (3-way) manual slide shut off valves give maintenance teams a straightforward way to isolate air supply, helping improve safety and streamline service procedures.
