With the introduction of the GHS VSD vacuum pump series, Atlas Copco has taken vacuum technology to a new level. Whereas vacuum systems used to consume energy regardless of demand, modern oil-sealed screw pumps are efficient systems that deliver vacuum according to demand.

In keeping with this tradition, Atlas Copco has developed the new GHS 402 – 902 VSDâº vacuum pump, in which the process vacuum depends on the flow requirement and is controlled by constant pressure setpoint control in the vacuum. This 2nd generation of the pump brings innovation delivering high pumping speeds — from atmospheric pressure to ultimate pressure. For users, this results not only in energy savings but also to faster pump down performance. With these attributes, the GHS 402-902 VSD+ is particularly suitable for food packing, vacuum cooling of flowers and vegetables and thermoforming of plastics and white goods.

The GHS 402 – 902 VSDâº models set the benchmark in vacuum performance. Equipped with our next-generation oil-injected screw element, a highly efficient IE5 motor, and advanced HEX connectivity, these pumps deliver intelligent performance, longer maintenance intervals, lower operating costs, and an overall lower environmental impact. “With higher pumping speeds and class leading efficiency across the entire pressure range, the GHS 402–902 VSDâº dramatically cuts power usage—directly improving our customersÂ’ bottom line while supporting their sustainability goals,” said Product Manager Ilias Alafogiannis.

With a new vertically mounted, fully integrated oil-cooled drivetrain, the GHS 402–902 VSD series deliver clear ergonomic and operational advantages—including lower noise levels and a compact footprint of less than 1 m². The optimized oil-separator vessel further enhances oil retention, ensuring a cleaner exhaust and reduced environmental impact.

“With a design 30% more compact and oil-discharge levels cut by half compared to previous models, combined with noise-dampening canopy, these pumps are ideal for both central vacuum systems and point of use applications — bringing significant improvements to the working environment of any production facility,” said Alafogiannis.

Key advantages of the GHS 402 – 902 VSD at a glance include:

  • Modern, oil-injected screw element with compression optimization valves offering high performance from atmospheric pressure and lower power consumption
  • Compact design with footprint of less than 1m2
  • Recovery of up to 80% of pump heat as reusable hot water
  • HEX intelligent controller enabling Industry 4.0 features as remote monitoring, intelligent control, and diagnostics
  • Lower noise levels, better oil retention and longer maintenance intervals.

Building on the proven success of its predecessor, piClassic Neo offers the performance and reliability that Piab vacuum technology is known for while minimizing their environmental impact. They come in a familiar footprint so users can integrate them easily, even for existing piClassic users. It features a multi-stage COAX ejector design, based on Piab’s innovative COAX technology, and energy saving functions, available for handling either leaking or sealed applications. This allows manufacturers to minimize their Scope 2 Emissions and energy-related costs.

The air-driven vacuum pump is available in two variants: piClassic Neo, the standard variant, with all ports accessible from one side; and piClassic Neo Inline with the exhaust direction opposite the vacuum port, for flush mounting directly on profiles. The Inline design is particularly suitable for end-of-arm-tooling (EOAT) and robotic applications, making equipment integration easier.

This new vacuum ejector is suitable for fast-paced packaging lines, high-precision electronics manufacturing, secure automotive production, or general industrial applications. It is designed to integrate effortlessly into a diverse range of industries with its multiple configuration possibilities, installation interfaces and accessories.

In addition, piClassic Neo is built for fast maintenance and long-lasting reliability. Key components are easily accessible thanks to its innovative and modular design, simplifying service efforts and reducing downtime to keep operations running smoothly. Multiple accessories and upgrade possibilities are available to ensure prolonged lifetime as well as adaptability to current and future application needs.

“By being easy to both install and maintain, piClassic Neo supports operational efficiency for a vast range of industrial applications, said Christina Storckenfeldt, Product Manager, Vacuum Automation Division, Piab AB.

The piClassicNeo features a design rooted in sustainability, working to fit industries worldwide that are shifting towards environmentally responsible manufacturing. It is designed following eco-design principles, resulting in up to 58% reduction in CO2-emissions cradle-to-gate compared to its predecessor. These results were determined through a commissioned life cycle assessment report performed in accordance with the ISO 14040 standard.

It uses premium sustainable materials (bio-based or recycled) for plastic components, and is designed for optimal material usage without compromising on durability and robustness.

Beyond the pump design itself, energy efficiency is at its core. With optional energy saving functions — piSave ESS or piSave ESL — users can minimize air consumption and reduce operating costs. This ensures a more efficient and responsible approach to vacuum solutions when handling either leaking or sealed materials. Users can achieve top-tier vacuum capabilities, while still reducing their environmental impact as they move towards manufacturing processes in alignment with global sustainability goals. PISave ESS is best used for handling air-tight materials, such as metal, glass or plastic, while piSave ESL is recommended for handling leaky materials, such as cardboard, fabric, bags, MDF boards or wood.

“We’ve designed piClassic Neo to fit not only today’s manufacturing demands but also tomorrow’s, helping manufacturers take a simple step toward a more sustainable production process,â€ Storckenfeldt added.
