Boston Dynamic’s BigDog is a rough-terrain robot that walks, runs, climbs and carries heavy loads. It’s powered by an engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. With four legs that are articulated like an animal’s—as well as compliant elements to absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next—it runs at an impressive 4 mph. What’s more, it can climbs slopes up to 35°.
